Concentrate on Your Poker Game, but Always Remember the Tips

The most important tip for a Texas Hold’em player is to know when to fold. Staying in the game is often not worth it and knowing the difference between when to play and when to throw in the towel is a key factor.

The decision regarding when to keep playing or when to fold basically depends on two things – your hole cards and the Flop cards. High hole cards are usually an indication to keep playing, but not always – again, the Flop cards have a “say” in the matter, too.

Follow the Tips and Improve your Poker Game

Here are some tips to help you know when to fold ‘em and when to hold ‘em before you see the Flop:

If you’re holding a couple of picture cards – say, a king and a jack of different suits - stay in, at least until you see the Flop.

If you’re holding an ace and another high card (10 or higher), hang on until the Flop. Fold if the “high” card is lower than a 9.

Keep an eye out for potential flushes and straights; if you have tens and face cards of the same suit, hang on until the Flop. Even better is an ace and a high card (10 and over) of the same suit.

Hang on for dear life if you are dealt a high pair – anything over a 7 is good enough to hold onto. A lower pair depends on the Flop so you’ll have to wait and see.

Turn a Good Poker Game into a Great Poker Game

Once you see the Flop, there are more decisions to be made:

Straights – If after you see the Flop you have a potential straight (say, if you have 4 out of the 4 cards you need for a straight), you should stay in. But the strength of your betting should depend on how low or high the straight will potentially be. If you’re holding a potential straight to the 7, stay in, but go easy on the betting. Low straights are nothing to get cocky about.

Straight Flushes – If your hand has the chance of becoming either a straight or a flush, keep going because it also can turn into a straight flush.

Low Pairs – if you’ve stayed in with a low pair in order to see the Flop, continue to play only if the Flop gives you another pair. Three of a kind would also be nice (even nicer), but fold if you don’t get at least those 2 pairs out of the Flop.

High Pairs – Stay in with a high pair if the Flop is showing a potential straight. In this case, you’re staying in hoping for the high 3 of a kind; the straight would be a bonus.

Don't Pray for Poker Miracles!

The tips above are meant to get you through the Flop and, if you’re still in, you have a new set of decisions to make after you see the Turn. Again, proceed with caution. A pair is not enough to keep you in. Don’t expect to be saved by the River – that’s the biggest mistake a Texas Hold’em player can make. If you’re still in when you’re facing the River, you should be holding something big, not praying for a miracle.
