Rules of Poker: The Deck

Generally a single deck of 52 cards is used. The order of the cards is numeric after which come the jack, queen, king and ace. The ace can also be used as a one for forming a straight (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). The two, which is also known as the deuce, is the lowest card. There are four suits; Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs and Spades. The suits are all of equal value.

Rules of Poker: The Hand

There are several different possible hands. These are ranked by order of superiority. The best hand is the 'straight flush'. In this hand, all the cards are of the same suit and are in consecutive order (e.g. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 - all Hearts). Next comes the 'four of a kind'. After that comes the 'full house'. This hand consists of a 'three of a kind' and a 'pair'. Beneath that lies the 'flush' which means that all the cards are of the same suit but are not in order. After that, comes the 'straight' which consists of all the cards being in consecutive order but of different suits. Finally come the 'two pairs', the 'pair' and the 'high card' (which is the default, if there is nothing else)

Rules of Poker: The Goal

The objective of the game is to achieve the best hand possible. Whoever holds the highest hand at the end of the round wins the round. The order of superiority is as detailed in the previous paragraph. In the event of a tie, where two players hold equal hands, the winner is the one who has the higher raking hand of the specific type. For example; if both players have a 'three of a kind', the one with the highest 'three of a kind' wins.

Poker Rules: The Round

The precise method of dealing the cards, the number of cards dealt and the rules of betting differ greatly between different poker games. In general there is a basic participation bet after which there is an initial deal, where the player gets some cards. The next step is another round of betting where players choose whether to raise, hold or fold. In some versions of poker more cards are dealt and another round of betting ensues. At the conclusion of the round, all players who are still in, display their cards and the pot is collected by the winner.
