Developing a Poker Strategy
So how does one get startedon poker strategy? Is there any sure-fire way to get off on the right foot at the poker table? There are a few things that you should understand. You must know enough about the game to be able to assess your chances of winning the hand with the cards you are holding. It's easy to learn the odds, what constitutes a good hand, and to be able to make a reasonable guess at what the other players are doing. Some players keep notes on their opponents, watching their gestures and evaluating their body language. This can give you a small edge and maybe useful. But you can probably rely on your instinct for what people are doing and what their intentions are.
What are the Real Poker Strategy Issues?
There are two really relevant issues to understand. First of all, poker is a money game. You can learn the card odds from books. The important thing is pot odds, how much will it cost you to play compared to how much you stand to win. You can't change the card odds, but the pot odds can be changed. The basic secret of poker strategy is to make the other players put a lot of money into the pots you win while you do not put very much into the pots that the others win. Play a tight game. When your opponents see you playing tight they don't stay with you unless they have very good hands. So you end up winning small pots. Some players play wildly in order to win, get a lot of action going so that the pots are big. This is wrong. This way they will win more pots but they will put a lot of money into other people's pots as well. What you must try and do is to make people put money into your pots.
Be a Poker Winner
Choose to be a winner rather than a loser. There are two types of losers - passive callers and wild players. The passive caller stays in too long, hoping against hope, knowing that he's bucking the odds. He doesn't raise when he should and he calls when he shouldn't. He knows he's playing like a loser but he continues playing in the same way. The wild player is in the game for action and excitement. He plays hands and raises when he shouldn't. He stays in the action no matter what. He keeps playing too many hands and pushing too hard. A player loses because he maintains his losing habits and in the end, he is actually happy being a loser. So sharpen up your poker strategy and make sure you play like a winner and you will be a winner!
