A Lexicon of Poker Terms
They often say that there are many opinions as there are those asked to give opinions. In other words, every individual is different, with different personalities, styles, modes of speech and language, behavioral characteristics, and so on. As individuals are different in such ways, so are games. Each game will naturally have its own rules and regulations, its own terms and conditions, and its own lexicon of terms and phrases. As such, there are many terms and phrases unique to Poker as well.
Poker Terminology
As Poker has many variations and forms, its terminology differs slightly from game to game. Some of those terms will be terms which will apply to any game, while others may apply to specific forms of the game. Therefore, it is important to know which version of Poker you are playing and what its rules and terms and methods are. However, it can be said that there is a basic lexicon of Poker terms which any player must know to understand and enjoy the game. Here are a few:
- 1. All-in – to run out of chips while betting.
- 2. Ante – a small portion of each player’s bet which is contributed to the pot at the start of the game.
- 3. Burn – to throw out the first card of the deck while face-down.
- 4. Buy-In – the amount of money paid by each entrant to enter a Poker tournament.
- 5. Call – to place in the pot an amount of money equaling the most recent bet.
- 6. Cap – to place the last raise in any round.
- 7. Center pot – the main pot, created first in the game.
- 8. Complete hand – a hand which is structured with all five cards.
- 9. Crying call – a call that you make when expecting to lose.
- 10. Draw – to play a hand which has not yet become strong, but has the possibility to.
- 11. Rank – the numerical value of a card.
