The art of poker bluffing
One of the most important ingredients of the poker game is your ability as a player to bluff. Bluffing is the simple art of forcing your opponents to try and guess what cards you are holding. It is also the art of making your opponent think that your hand is unbeatable. So serious poker players try not to shows their emotions by expression or body language thus telling their opponents about the strength or weakness of their hand. Once your opponent guesses what cards you are holding, he will use that information to win the hand.
To the uninitiated, bluffing can be a risky business and it takes an experienced poker player to know whether he can keep on bluffing or if it's time to throw in his hand.
When should you bluff in poker?
When there are only two players in the game. The risk of your being called down by a single player is much lower than in a multi-way pot. The pot is probably, but not necessarily, small and less desirable in these situations.
When you think you are projecting a winning image. If you have been playing seriously and conservatively, a bluff is more likely to succeed. The other players will think that you are holding a strong hand when you bet, raise or re-raise.
When you are sure that that none of the other players are holding strong hands. If you are a good bluffer yourself, use your knowledge to read your opponents' faces and body language. Watch their faces from the beginning of the game and gather all the information you can about them and the way they play.
When the cards on the board have been of help to any of the other players. The ideal situation is when there are no obvious draws on the board and there is a scare card you can represent.
When the pot is small. This makes it less desirable and the other players will probably fold if they are not holding strong hands.
When should you not bluff in poker?
Never bluff when you are projecting a loose or weak table image. You have already been caught bluffing at this table, so there is a good chance that your next bluff will fail.
When there are three or more players in the hand. One of them is bound to call your bluff!
Be careful when you are at the table with players less skilled than yourself. A naïve player will call with almost any hand and this will simply neutralize your bluff.
Watch out when the pot is very big. This makes it very desirable to everyone and it will only take an average hand for a player to see the hand down.
