Poker Variations: Texas Hold'em Poker
Every game has its variations. For example, the game of Roulette encompasses American Roulette, European Roulette, and Roulette Royale. Baccarat can come in three forms: American, European, and Chermin de Fer. Poker has perhaps more variations than any other game, as it is one of the most commonly played card games in the world. One of these forms of Poker is Texas Hold'Em - perhaps one of the most commonly known and recognized version of the game. Texas Hold'Em naturally has much in common with the standard Poker game - in terms of terminology - but also has terms and phrases that are all its own.
Texas Hold'Em Poker Terminology
If one were to list all of the terminology of Poker and of Texas Hold'Em Poker, the list would go on forever. Here are just a small sampling of Texas Hold'Em words and phrases:
Action card - A card which appears that helps two or more players. Usually there is much noise and action following the revealing of such a card.
Backdoor - In Texas Hold'Em, this is a draw which requires two or more rounds to complete. Drawing two cards in two consecutive rounds to complete a single hand.
Dominated hand - A hand which may be strong on its own, but is unlikely to win.
Door card - The first card of the flop which can be seen.
Double board/double flop - two separate sets of community cards are dealt simultaneously.
Dry ace - An ace in a player's hand that does not accompany another card of the same suit.
Play the board - If your hand is the best on the board and you choose to go to showdown.
Post - To make a required blind bet.
Under the gun - The playing position to the left of the blinds. This player must be the first under the first round of betting.
