A Little 'Texas Hold'em' History
'Texas Hold'em' Poker is a variant of poker whose origin is uncertain. The Texans claim that they invented it and they even took pains to have it written down in the state legislature. After becoming popular in Texas it spread to Las Vegas where it slowly took hold. Texas hold'em was one of the poker variants that were played at the first world poker tournament. In later tournaments, no limit Texas hold'em became the main event. This has remained true even today. Texas hold'em became legal in California in 1988 and became instantly popular there as well. The popularity of Texas Hold'em further increased in recent years thanks to favorable exposure in all the media and several popular tournaments.
What is Texas Hold'em Poker?
Texas Hold'em Poker is a version of poker of the subtype known as community card poker. This means that although each player receives private cards, there are some cards which are shared by all players. The private cards are only exposed at the end of the game (if at all) thus making Texas hold'em a 'closed' poker game. Each player receives two private cards and there are five more cards which are added as community cards. The game includes four rounds of betting and whoever is left at the end of the four rounds participates in the 'showdown'. The winner is the player holding the highest poker hand. The winner receives the 'pot' which is the sum of all the wagers throughout the game. If there is a tie at the showdown the remaining players split the pot.

Poker tournaments are well publicized and are often televised making Texas Hold'em a spectator sport. There are several avenues of participation in tournaments including entering via online 'satellite' tournaments. In fact, some of the winners of the World Series poker tournaments entered the tournament as Internet players. The excitement of Texas Hold'em Poker has spread throughout the known world and everyone is invited to join!
